Boris Hinz, PhD

Boris Hinz is President of the European Tissue Repair Society and heading the Research Development Committee. He is Associate Professor at the Matrix Dynamics Group, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, Canada since January 2009. Dr. Hinz is cross-appointed Professor with the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Surgery and the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. He holds a PhD degree in Cell Biology and Theoretical Biology from the University of Bonn, Germany, obtained in 1998. From 1999 to 2002, he was postdoctoral fellow of Dr. Giulio Gabbiani, Department of Experimental Pathology, Centre Medical Universitaire, University of Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Hinz then moved on to lead a research group at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, joining the worlds of Cell Biology, Biophysics, and Bioengineering. He was nominated Maître d'enseignement et de recherché in 2006.

Dr. Hinz aims in understanding the role of contractile myofibroblasts in physiological tissue repair and in causing pathological tissue fibrosis. He is editorial board member of the Journal Wound Repair and Regeneration and Associate Member of the Faculty of 1000. Dr. Hinz is publishing in peer-reviewed journals, including J. Cell Biol, Stem Cells, Nature Immunol., Mol. Biol. Cell, J. Cell Sci., Biomaterials, Am. J. Pathol., and the J. Invest. Dermatol. He published over 50 articles, 7 book chapters, and 180 congress abstracts. The research of Boris Hinz is currently funded by grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (HSFO), the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the Connaught Foundation, the European Union's FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network, the Swiss National Science Foundation (FNS), the Gebert Rüf Foundation, the Novartis Science Foundation, and the Agence de la promotion de l'innovation CTI/KTI.
